Venus and Mercury Retrograde

An Adventure Beyond Belief

We head into the Sun's season in mystical Pisces with the momentum of Mars coming to a standstill in the nurturing sign of Cancer, where he has returned to normal, direct motion on Feb. 23. For some, this may bring forth a wild, bucking frenzy of activity while for others, there is an intensification of waiting for conditions to ripen so that we may move forward with our activities. The warrior energy of Mars hands the baton of retrograde motion to Venus, who is presently slowing down to station retrograde on March 1 in Mars' sign of Aries.

The social grace of Venus is a bit challenged in the martial sign of Aries, and tends to prefer independence within intimate relationships. A love of combat is another quality of Venus refracted through the lens of Aries, and in combination with Venus' retrograde character, we can expect a desire to overturn social convention and a greater willingness to engage in confrontation. On the whole, Venus actually desires reciprocity and fairness, and if she sometimes has to upset applecarts to achieve this then so be it. Superficial harmony may be severely challenged over the next three or four months as masks are pulled off and hidden tensions are exposed.

Taking a different perspective, Venus' entire retrograde path is also entangled in the world-transforming conjunction of Saturn and Neptune which spans March 2024 to May 2027. Traversing the archetypal territory of this combination, Venus could bring to the fore our imagination of the role of caring, kindness and love in our personal lives as well as in much wider social spheres. The conjunction of Saturn and Neptune represent a kind of collision between a literal (Saturn) and a symbolic (Neptune) understanding of reality: Saturn's cold, hard facts versus Neptune's continuously birthing fountains of meaning. Both perspectives on our world are required for health and well-being, of course, and Venus' retrograde is sure to turn up imbalances among both ways of viewing reality. Nothing is quite as it seems to be.

Just for fun, perhaps, the trickster Mercury will also be stationing retrograde on March 14, in a near mirror of Venus' retrograde path through Aries and Pisces. This rather unusual coincidence of retrograde paths, combined with oceanic Neptune's grand entry into Aries on March 30 for the first time in 150 years, and the March 29 solar eclipse at the degree of Mercury's and Venus' retrograde station in Aries makes March a most interesting month. When symbols stack up like this, it indicates a particular potency and we can expect significant events with far-reaching consequences.

Mercury represents our ability to conceptualize and carries the potential of crossing barriers to understanding, and this retrograde may bring some poignant reminders that information alone does not constitute knowledge. In fact, lacunae—gaps in our knowledge—may be what our entire understanding has thus far constellated around. A creative response to the revelations of March 2025 may require us to let go of cherished frameworks of understanding, in order to receive some new knowledge. That is, we may be called to a reorganization of how we had previously made sense of information, and some of us may experience this as a slow dissolution and reconstitution over the course of several months.

Neptune's infinite fountain of imagination outweighs Saturn's predictable rule set in this case and rather than becoming fixated on the individual actors in our drama, it's helpful to take in more about the stage upon which they play. It could be that the fleeting glimpses we catch at the periphery of our awareness, or the insights that emerge from a more relaxed state of being provide the path to truth and understanding.

We must gather a sufficiently deep and broad context for revelations, disclosures and perhaps inexplicable information, which may be slow going due to Saturn-Neptune's tendency to produce pervasive confusion and fear. Holding our hearts open to the world, and letting what we love—rather than what we fear—guide our responses is one way forward that could bear good fruits.

As the consequences of the events of March and April unfold, we are almost certain to experience a demonstration of the fact that our attention is an act of creation. What we attend to, and especially how we attend to it, is in itself a creative act, and as we find our way into the extremely consequential year of 2025, we might consider the perspective of the inventor George Washington Carver: "Anything will give up its secrets if you love it enough."
